| Dear
WWOOFer: Thanks for you interest in WWOOFing here at Locavore Farms! We would love to have your help around here, and always look forward to meeting folks interested in the WWOOF scheme. Our main goal is to provide you with a safe and healthy environment where you may find fun, enjoyment, fulfillment, exercise, a suntan - whatever you are seeking. As you know, the deal is an exchange of 1/2 days labor for simple, healthy, ample food, comfy tent accommodation, and good times out here in Modoc County. We expect at least 4 hours of work, at least 5 days per week. Work times will vary according to the weather and work to be done. After the first week here, we'll have an honest evaluation talk together to make sure this is the best place for you to be at this time in your life. If it's not, we'll try to help you move to whatever that place may be. We have two large tents in good condition near the house and fields but nestled in a private and peaceful creekside location with its own composting toilet (the toilet is named "Throney" - you'll see why). We will have breakfast set out by 7am, or 6am on harvest days - it could be fix your own granola or pancakes, fruit and yogurt, brown rice and bananas, muffins, or something else, along with coffee, tea and juice. We need the area to be clean and see you ready to work by 8:30, but you may want to start much earlier if the weather is warm. Lunch is our main meal of the day - farm fresh, usually vegan with ovo lacto and meat options (depending on our WWOOFer preferences), cooked by us, sometimes with your help. Dinner is usually little more low-key: left over lunch and such, or perhaps an outing or fix-your-own with adequate kitchen basics and your imagination and recipes. This is probably the point where we ought to talk about smoking. Most of the year, our area is prone to fires and any real response to a fire emergency is at least half an hour away, so we're a little freaked about anything you use a match or lighter on. If you feel you must indulge, please talk to us first and we'll work out a safe situation for you to do so. Smoking is not allowed in the house ever. Outside fires are not allowed from June through October. A lil' about our living situation - the house is well-equipped but small and it is Laurie's home. You are very welcome to enjoy it in ways that keep everyone happy. This means respecting the space in certain ways. The house is not free-access at all hours; after 9pm (or on movie nights, after the movie) we appreciate some privacy, so plan your meal and scrabble game accordingly. Ask us before using things in the house, like phone or computer - don't worry, we'll say yes unless there is some pressing reason to ask you to wait. While working, be prepared with adequate, closed-toed shoes, a hat and/or other protection from the sun, which you will be exposed to for loooong periods. Nighttime is typically cool or even cold, though not always. Be prepared with warm gear. We really want folks who are highly self-motivated, without getting high during work hours. This means we are all free of substance issues, heavy habits, and inter-personal drama and expect the same. Let's kick ass for those 4 hours, it's what's expected and what we need and why we do this. Well, we also do this to meet really cool folks and find out how we came together through WWOOF. You may have all types of experiences, but please be ready to learn from us as we learn from you. Due to the beauty of our outdoor living situation, we ask you to enjoy it as much as possible and be in the house as little as possible. It won't rain often (if ever), there are many lovely spots to discover and delight in, and Laurie will expect some amount of privacy and personal space in the great indoors. After work hours, hop in the hammock, go for a hike up the canyon, drive to a nearby lake, cruise on our bikes to "town", float around the pond in our rowboat the SS Minnow, hang out by the creek reading your own books or books from our library, create a permanent or temporary art installation, meet the townsfolk, work more- whatever sounds fun to you. Do what you like, enjoy our little community. The most important thing is mutual respect for what we are doing here, who we are, and how we can learn from each other. Open communication is essential to everyone's success, an understanding of 4-hours daily and good food and lodging is crucial, and if you have any questions or problems, we want to do everything we can to answer them right away. Likewise, please take any suggestions, requests, or feedback in the most constructive way possible. It's going to be a great experience, and we are really looking forward to meeting you! -- Locavore Farms at Rancho LoveJoyPeace 365 County Road 165 Fort Bidwell, CA 96112 (530) 279-2106 Happy WWOOFing!
